Matatiki at the Moqsue

Last year, some Māori Muslims raised concerns that there was limited knowledge about Māori culture within the community.

From that came Ō Mātou Reo, which translates to "our collective voice" - a group of Māori and non-Māori Muslims who support Māori culture and language within the religion and work to support Māori Muslims.

The group has already started introducing te reo signs for different rooms in mosques and worked to bring Matariki at the Mosque to life.

Eid In Parliament

Represent!   Other distinguished guests who attended the event are the members of the diplomatic community of the Muslim countries, some Members of Parliament, Interfaith and community leaders.

The programme was well managed by officials of the Ministry of Ethnic Communities.

The official programme began with the recitation of the Holy Qur’an rendered beautifully by Sheikh Omar Maghdadi of the Newland Islamic Centre. The translation of the Qur’an was done by Sr Rehanna Ali of Wellington.

In her speech, Hon Minister Jenny Salesa, in expressing her Eid Mubarak to the guests, also spoke eloquently about the contributions of the New Zealand Muslim community.

Manaakitāngā

Manakitanga means to extend aroha (love and compassion) to others. It is found in acts such as helping a loved one, encouraging one another or even supporting a complete stranger.

We continue to collaborate with like-minded local and international organisations and host overseas guests.
